SEPTEMBER 2019 – INFORMATION UPDATE

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School:

As you continue to enjoy your summer vacation, I am sure you are thinking of, and looking forward to the first day of school at St. Thomas Aquinas.  Classes resume on Tuesday, September 3rd at 8:20 a.m. The school day ends at 2:27 p.m.

There have been some changes to our administration team at STA.  We would like to welcome our new vice-principals Mr. Clark McDougall and Mrs. Catherine Serafim.  Mrs. Montanari has moved to her new role of IB Coordinator and Vice-Principal of International Students for HCDSB.

St. Thomas Aquinas will be holding a “gently used” uniform sale on Wednesday, August 28th from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  (Cash or cheque only, please).

For all returning grade 10, 11 and 12 students, you may access your timetable – after August 30st – on the SIS system online at www.hcdsb.org/sis using your HCDSB student number and your birth date.  If you do not access your timetables using the SIS system, you will receive your timetables in your Period 1 class on Tuesday, September 3rd.  To locate your Period 1 class, please go to the Main Entrance hallway (atrium), find your name/period 1 class on the alphabetized list and then proceed to your period 1 class.  All lockers are assigned and all students must use the locker and lock assigned to them.  Locker numbers are listed on the top right corner of your timetable.  Students will be given locks in their period 1 class.

What is new at STA?

  1. STA will be trialing an education app which is accessible free of charge to students and parents.  A parent inservice will be provided during curriculum night in our theatre.
  2. New Administration TEAM and a change of roles for previous school Vice Principal.   Mrs. Montanari moving to IB and International Student Departments.  Mr. McDougall responsible for the student alpha A-K.  Mrs. Serafim responsible for the student alpha L-Z.

Student Services will be open the last week in August (26th to 29th) to assist students with timetabling issues.  Guidance counselors will meet with students who:

  • have completed a summer school course and now require a change in their 2019/20 schedule;
  • The student wished to make a level change;
  • The student is in grade 11 or 12 and wants to make a pathway change.

Students wishing to make a course/schedule change will meet with their councelor after the above mentionned priorities have been completed by the Guidance department.

Students/parents will be able to book appointments to see counselors the last week of August  https://sta.hcdsb.org/2019-august-appointments/

Please find the Uniform Policy, Late Policy, Attendance Policy etc. on the school website.  It is important to review these carefully so that you will have a clear understanding of policies and expectations.

All students are expected to be in full uniform on Tuesday, September 3, the first day of classes.  ISW (InSchoolwear) is our official uniform supplier.  Their number is 905-844-1414.

Students registered in a Physical Education course are required to wear a Physed uniform.  You may purchase these from your Physed teacher during the first week of classes in September.

At STA, we will continue to strive to create a “minimized allergen environment”.  Some of our students have life-threatening allergies to certain food products and all types of nuts.  While we cannot guarantee a “peanut-free” school, we hope to enlist your support by helping to make our school as realistically as possible a “minimized allergen environment”. As such, we ask you to bring lunches and snacks free of any peanuts or nuts.  We thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

Parents/Guardians are asked to complete updated medical forms for their son/daughter and return them to the main office.  An electronic copy of the medical form was sent home via email in June

We will undertake a number of routine safety procedures that will help our school prepare for an emergency situation.  While we cannot predict an emergency, we will do our best to practice and prepare for emergency situations.  Each semester, we will hold 3 fire drills.  Evacuation drills and a practice of a “lockdown” drill will be held twice during the year.

To further ensure a safe and positive learning environment, a uniformed Commissionaire will also be on staff at STA.  The Commissionaire’s main role is to provide visible and active supervision throughout the school day.  The Commissionaire program is in all Halton Catholic Secondary Schools.

Please note that all important dates and information for STA are posted on our web site at sta.hcdsb.org and on our new STA app.

Please note that students will take home all progress reports and report cards.

If you have any questions or concerns at any time regarding the academic progress of your child, please contact your daughter’s/son’s subject teacher at any time during the semester.  You do not have to wait until a Parent-Student-Teacher Interview Night.  At any time, you may access your child’s marks, attendance and timetable using our SIS system at www.hcdsb.org/sis.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 – the first day of class.

Please check the school website for important dates. We look forward to a great year!
