Whenever tragedy and youth happen, we are faced with the delusion of our invincibility and control over our own lives. Such was the recent bus crash killing many young people from the Humboldt Bronco’s hockey team. There is a collective disbelief leveled at the immediate, local, and national psyche. It reminds us of how little control we have in our own lives.
In the midst of all this seeming chaos we stand as Easter people. Our faith teaches us that Jesus brings light into darkness and hope into despair.
As a sign of our solidarity with the community Humboldt, we are asking our St. Thomas Aquinas community to wear Gold and Green on Thursday. Gold is the Easter colour representing the promise of the resurrection and Green represents the hope of new life. Let Thursday be a day we honour all those who have experienced tragedy and recognize our solidarity as children of God.
